Windows 7 Release Candidate 1 seems to be faster than the beta, starts up and shuts down faster, and includes some refinements to the user interface. Windows XP Mode will run XP applications in a Windows XP virtual machine, but appear to the user to be running on Windows 7.
http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9132211

Windows XP Mode is available for testing by MSDN and TechNet subscribers, but is still labeled with an earlier Virtual XP brand. Windows XP Mode is intended for small businesses to make migration to Windows 7 easier, and the MED-V technology aimed at large companies is not available to them. XPM could mean support problems, because developers still have to support their applications on XP, and XP is not on mainstream support any more. Hardware minimums include 2GB RAM and hardware virtualization support, so XPM will not work on low end PCs, such as netbooks.
