While not intended for production use, the beta includes most of what you'll find in the final release of Fedora 9, including new versions of Gnome, KDE, Firefox and the Linux kernel. Fedora 9 is slated to arrive in final form later this spring. If you’re feeling adventurous and want to check out the Fedora 9 beta, you can grab the ISO disc image from the Fedora site or go with a torrent download. Along with Gnome 2.22 and KDE 4, Fedora 9 features Package Kit, a new graphical application installer that promises to “unify all the software graphical tools used in different distributions, and use some of the latest technology like PolicyKit to make the process suck less.” Applications shipping with Fedora, like Firefox and OpenOffice, have also been updated for the Fedora 9 beta. On the whole Fedora 9 looks to be an impressive update for the distribution and naturally we’ll be sure to take it for a spin when the final release is available.
