I just had a problem where any video I played was in black and white. If you have this issue it's easy to fix. Just open a terminal and type the following:

rm -r ~/.gconf/apps/totem
Now log out and log back in.

I should add that I had this problem in Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon.

What is "totem"? Do you really need to remove everything in that directory and all its subdirectories?

It's a free media player for GNOME. As for your second question I don't know. I just found the instructions and did what it said and it worked so I'm assuming you do.
