Strange...I have absolutely no idea how I got it, as I'm not one to visit sites that I shouldn't be visiting, but it seems that my computer - with Windows Vista - was just infected with the Trojan Horse virus, of all viruses. "Trojan horse General6 UMS" and "UMU," more specifically, according to AVG, which warned me immediately after I turned on my PC.

I know that this is one of those rather serious and difficult viruses to deal with. I recall the basement computer being infected with it before and I think we reformatted the drive, but there's gotta be a simpler (yet free) way to do it without doing so, isn't there?

So, uh, yeah. Any help you can give me would, needless to say, greatly be appreciated, lol.

Interesting, I can't seem to find it anywhere online.

Anyways, I would boot into safe mode and run the AVG antivirus scan. I'd also suggest running A Squared Trojan Scanner at the same time.

I'll continue to take a look into it, but perhaps we should contact Windsor about this, as it might be a false positive.

See what happens when I send a message to you in every way possible. He ditches us and goes somewhere else LOL. I know nothing about viruses and a little about other computer problems. Maybe I'll pick something up in one of the classes I'm in. Not sure.

I glanced over that thread, it seemed that Windsor couldn't find anything either.

I need to stop in here more often. Speedy, I no longer recommend A-Squared (for about a year and a half now) and you shouldn't either. That product stopped being effective long ago and is really bad with excessive false positives, some of which are system crippling. If you visit their forums you will see many complaints about FPs and systems that no longer function after running their product. I had it quarantine explorer.exe on me during my last test of the product back in 11/06. The file was not set to quarantine nor was it infected. If I was the average Joe, I would have been reformatting after that. Fortunately I'm not and was able to save the machine, but that was the last time I ever allowed A-Squared to quarantine/delete anything. It used to be a great product, but those days are long over.

In A-Squared's defense, they are quick to correct any FPs that are reported, but how many systems get damaged before they do??? FP's happen to every vendor, but the amount of times it happens to A-Squared is ridiculous and inexcusable.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll remove that one from my free software list. I won't promote products that are ineffective.

SUPERAntiSpyware and AVG Anti-Spyware are the only 2 products you want to be promoting. The are the most effective free products out there. The most effective paid program could be said for SUPERAntiSpyware as well. Both are lightweight unlike other popular products like CounterSpy, Spyware Doctor and SpySweeper. All three of them are excellent products as far as detection/removal, but they are extremely heavy and some are buggy too. (CS and SS)

For reference...

FYI, the SAS link contains my affiliate ID.

Any word on the effectiveness of Ad-Aware and Spy Bot?

I don't use either of them much anymore, but then again I'm also not on Windows much anymore.

They are both still reputable programs, but far less effective against modern day malware than days gone by. I'd have to say Spybot S&D is the more effective of the two. It's hijack protection, tools and immunization feature add to it's usefulness. I certainly wouldn't call either program worthless, just not as effective as they once were.

From the way it was explained to me, a trojan is a spy ware and not a virus, but most anti viruses do detect it but can't get rid of them. I seem to have good results with ewido online scanner.

You are sort of correct burncarlos:

From Wikipedia:

A Trojan horse, or simply trojan, is a piece of software which appears to perform a certain action but in fact performs another such as a computer virus. Contrary to popular belief, this action, usually encoded in a hidden payload, may or may not be actually malicious, but Trojan horses are notorious today for their use in the installation of backdoor programs. Simply put, a Trojan horse is not a computer virus. Unlike such malware, it does not propagate by self-replication but relies heavily on the exploitation of an end-user (see Social engineering). It is instead a categorical attribute which can encompass many different forms of codes. Therefore, a computer worm or virus may be a Trojan horse.
